Scaffold refer to structures that are used for balance and support while constructing. It is used mostly in buildings. It could be during construction, painting, or even renovations. In construction, it is regarded as one of the safety regulations. Because it is a regulation, there are standards controlling its use.

Scaffold is usually put up around a building and should be taller than the building. This way, it will be able to perform its primary function of providing support. When it is properly installed and used, it can greatly reduce the number of accidents in construction sites. They are different types, and knowing the one to use for your construction work will make the site safer.

Types Of Scaffold

  • Single Scaffold: This is most regular type available in construction sites. It is made up of vertical members that are called standards that have the longitudinal members attached at the different working heights or levels. Putlogs are then tied or attached to the vertical members on one end and the other end rests on the walls being built. The stability of the single type is improved by cross bracing. These types of scaffold can be used in the construction of buildings and walls. It is very safe.
  • Double Scaffold: This is usually considered to be safer than the single ones. Unlike the single ones that have just the outside vertical members, the double type makes use of pairs of vertical members. There are vertical members outside and there are vertical members inside. Therefore, the two ends of the putlogs are on the inner and outer verticals. The stability of the double type is improved by tying it to the structure at different heights or levels. This type of scaffold is used mainly for plastering work. It is safe and reliable.
  • Cantilever Scaffold: This is almost the same as the double type but with slight differences. The Cantilever type helps to free up space at the bottom of buildings when constructing. This clears up space for vehicles and machines. Cantilever props are used to support the framework at the bottom. Above the cantilever prop, we have the inner and outer vertical members. These vertical members support the two ends of the putlog. Stability is achieved by tying it to the building. This type is used when working on the upper part of tall buildings.
  • Birdcage Type: Like the name, this type looks just like a bird cage but bigger. It is used to work inside the structure being constructed. Unlike other types previously mentioned, the birdcage type is moveable. It is supported by four verticals. Most internal plastering jobs and finishing touches are done with it.
  • Ladder type: This type looks just like a ladder. It is made up of two separate ladders whose top ends are joined with boards or plank. The construction worker can stand or sit on this framework to work. When doing light works, this is the best. It could be used for painting or minor renovations. It can also be easily moved around.
  • Suspended Type: At first glance, this looks like the cantilever type. The major difference is that there are no cantilever props in use in this type. It is used for working at high levels, usually above thirty metres. They are usually fixed and operated using pulley system. At such heights, wind is usually an issue. The stability of this type is ensured by the pulley system and supports from the building. The support could be ropes or chains or external cranes. They can be used by window cleaners in high rise buildings as well as painters.

Conclusion

Safety of workers should always come first in every construction site. By using a scaffold, you can prevent a large percentage of site accidents.
